“Life is like a box of chocolates,” said Forest Gump in the movie. “You never know what you’re going to get.”

That catchphrase is spot-on for a highly limited, special-edition release of an artfully designed and crafted box of European chocolates. The box reveals several layers of packaging design surprises including a sleight-of-hand visual twist upon opening.

Printing company Colordruck Baiersbronn created a truly one-of-a-kind box of scrumptious chocolates for a gathering of confectionery professionals.

It’s a memento that should make a lasting impression.

The laser-cut the lid mimics peeping through window blinds. Inside are 12 individual printed paper cubes, which are neatly folded origami style sans glue.

Each wraps a hand-made praline, and each is printed with a different, colorful “mountain peak” pattern using HP SmartStream Mosaic digital printing software that can create thousands of variations.

In another attention to detail, the scheme echoes the mountainous Swiss region that hosted the confectionery connoisseurs.

The sleight-of-hand is apparent after the box is opened; the images on wrapped chocolates as seen through the lid’s slats are not the same as on the wraps.

We don’t want to spoil the design magic as to how it was accomplished, but it’s something that Penn & Teller may have done had they been packaging designers.

As a final touch, the lid snaps shut with the satisfying snap of a magnetic closure reflective of premium packaging.

The video is hosted by Sabine Lenz, founder of Paper Specs, who provides expert insights in calling out all the wonderful packaging and design details.

Lenz's expertise was last seen in Unexpected Whiskey Packaging is for the Birds, published in May.
