If you’re in the same boat as I am, you’d probably know how expensive this can be – I don’t quite dare to calculate how much I’ve spent at aesthetic clinics over the years.
Therefore, I had my reservations when we received the pitch for the Young&Be Pro-Rejuvenating HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) Solution, a home-solution touted to have the “same efficacy as HIFU dermatological treatment”.
Nevertheless, I started using it coupled with skincare products that were sent together in the mail and crossed my fingers for the best.
After all, the brochure that was sent over had testimonials from dermatologists raving about how the machine worked as well as the expensive machines in aesthetic clinics.
A few products are supposed to complement the HIFU routine for better results. They are, clockwise from bottom left:
Essello Deep Exfoliation Gel - A gel which removes dead skin cells in order for the skin to absorb the other products better.
It didn’t cause any irritation to my sensitive skin, and my skin felt squeaky clean after gently exfoliating all the dead skin with light circular motions.
Dermaceleb Cellonic Booster - An ampoule that promises to repair skin and aid in anti-ageing.
Oxytical Vial Kit 3.98 - An ampoule that apparently lifts skin and helps your skin glow from within.
Pilotica Exsior - a moisturiser suitable for sensitive skin. It’s said to have healing properties too.
Coincidentally, the products are meant to be used in this order, and the latter three are meant to be applied on a clean, dried face with light patting motions, like this:
The real star, however, was the HIFU device, which I was to use twice a week on my entire face.
After using the skincare products as instructed, I opened the Young&Be’s app, which would track my skin age and give instructions on where I should apply the HIFU device.
A quick analysis showed that my skin age was that of a 28-year-old’s.
Here, I have to point out that the app seems to calculate ages with the Korean system, which adds a year to your actual age.
Being in the top 24 per cent of those in their 30s (ugh) on the app wasn’t the worst news, but I wondered how much difference it would make if I religiously kept up with the prescribed skincare regimen.
Those familiar with ultrasounds or radiofrequency procedures wouldn’t be surprised by the tingling sensation that came with using the HIFU device.
Young&Be’s emits two rounds of pulses, one which reaches the epidermis layer at 1.5mm, and the other which reaches the dermis layer at 3.0mm.
The first, which is closer to the surface, doesn’t feel like much.
The second penetrates deeper into the skin, and was so tingly at some areas, especially close to the bones.
In aesthetic clinics, numbing creams are usually applied to the skin prior to lifting treatments because of how painful they can be. Without the numbing creams at home, doing the HIFU treatment wasn’t completely pain-free.
Pro tip: If it gets too much for you, take short breaks in between.
Thankfully, the app told me exactly where I should be placing the device with every shot.
There is also only one button on the device – pressing and holding on it powers the device on and off, while a single press is used to fire a round of shots.
The device also emits a short beep when it’s done with the round of shots, signalling you to move on to the next area.
A month later, I did the skin analysis again and was pleasantly surprised by the result:
I’d somehow shaved four whole years off my skin age, with the most notable improvement at my cheek area.
Considering how the analysis works by photos taken by your phone camera, you should ensure that the lighting used in all your photos is consistent – it would be inaccurate if one photo was taken in near darkness, and the other in bright light, for example.
I also noticed that the apples of my cheeks were slightly more lifted than a month ago, and that my jawline looked just a teensy bit sharper in photos.
It was like I got a thread lift done, except I didn’t.
Worth noting is that I haven’t been getting enough sleep for the past week or so, which is probably the reason why my eye area dropped from a B+ ranking to a B.

Regardless, the improvement was enough for me to feel a tinge of sadness as I packed the HIFU device to be returned.
Unless, of course, the client wants to let us keep it.
