A startup called Rendyr has developed the Optic, a clever design for a portable, space-saving 15W laser cutter with integrated filtration:

Although the footprint is relatively small, it actually has a comparable work area (12" x 18"), with its cutting mat in place, to the much larger Glowforge (11" x 19.5"): Cnc Laser Cutting Metal Steel

Additionally, the cutting mat can be detached. Placed atop a larger workpiece, the Optic now has infinite cutting area (though I'm not sure how they're indexing it):

Here's the Kickstarter pitch video:

The Optic Portable Laser Cutter has been a massive success on Kickstarter. At press time it had landed $564,637 in funding on a $50,000 goal, with 20 days left to pledge. Buy-in starts at $1,995 and the machines are expected to ship by October of this year.

This is the claim - interesting to see how well this works in practice. "The infinite work area process is simple and does not require the exact positioning of the Optic. After repositioning the Optic, matching the laser pointer with two specified points on the artwork allows the included software, LightBurn, to precisely align the next tile in the sequence."
