Beware of ATO Scams

ATO impersonation scams occur when someone – or a criminal syndicate – pretends to be from the ATO in an attempt to get money from clients.

If you receive a scam phone call or text message, and have not paid or provided personal identifying information to the scammer, you can Report the scam online.

If you are ever unsure whether any specific ATO interaction is genuine, don’t reply. Call the ATO on 1800 008 540 or visit ato.gov.au/scams.

How do Scamsters Operate?

Scammers try to obtain your Personal Identifying Information (PII) including

  • Date of birth,
  • Tax file number (TFN),
  • driver’s licence number
  • ATO Notice of Assessment (NOA) details

Scammers piece together bits of information, with your name and address to compromise your identity.
